Mental Health Medications and the FDA

Medications used for mental health disorders and conditions are usually used in combination with talk therapy and occasionally with brain stimulation therapy. Treatment plans are always created by a mental health professional and built around an individual’s symptoms and diagnosis.

Check the FDA website about your prescribed meds regularly because new information is constantly being catalogued about them.

Before your doctor prescribes medication for your condition, it’s very important that he/she knows about anything that could affect the way your body reacts to it, to include:

  • All other medications you are taking
  • All vitamin and herbal supplements
  • Any allergic reactions you have experienced to taking any medication for any condition

To help you get the most from your prescribed meds and avoid any adverse effects, be sure to:

  • Take the medication exactly as instructed.
  • Tell your doctor about any adverse reactions to the medication.
  • Talk to your doctor if you believe the meds are not working properly —you might need a different dosage or need to change to another medication.
REPORT SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS TO THE FDA MEDWATCH ADVERSE EVENT REPORTING PROGRAM ONLINE OR BY PHONE [1-800-332-1088]. YOU OR YOUR DOCTOR MAY SEND A REPORT.
